The building as it stands now was built in the 1930s to plans drawn up by C J McNair & Elder. The building was created as a hotel for working men. As late as the 1970s the building was still in use for this purpose, and it was a strict requirement of occupancy that the men held a job. The hotel is considered to be a striking example of art deco, 30s Moderne architecture.
